Horse Racing has had its time with the Triple Crown and it is time for the NFL to steal it. Thirteen horses have won the triple crown and honestly, that’s just a few too many in my extremely humble opinion. The NFL is on the precipice of its first-ever back-to-back-to-back Super Bowl (Don’t sue me NFL) winner, in the Kansas City Chiefs. There are a lot of conversations about the Chiefs winning their third consecutive ring but it consists of the same “Can they do it?” or “Can they three-peat?”. The answer is yes they can, they are heading into their Bye Week 5-0 with an offense that is arguably worse off now than it was last year. Riddled with season-ending injuries and players being placed on the IR in hopes they make it back in time.
But, let’s get back to the topic at hand the Triple Crown. The NFL should be doing everything it can to promote the idea that there could be a Triple Crown winner. Something that has never been done before in the NFL post-merger. I can hear the Packers fans already “We won three in a row blah blah blah”, yeah well Jim who were they playing against? The plumber from down the street? Right, so sit back down and let the men talk. There have been nine back-to-back champions but none have been able to capture the elusive third title in a row. Until now, where the Chiefs have the best chance to make it happen (barring a catastrophic injury). As a fan of the game, I would like to see the NFL create a new category for Triple Crown winners. I believe that if a team is able to win three titles in a row they should be awarded a literal crown. Signifying the three titles won and it should only be one crown that the franchise holds on display next to the Lombardi trophy. That’s right two trophies for one team, one to signify the winner of that season (the Lombardi) and another to signify the odds-defying feat of winning three championships in a row (a crown).
But, let’s play the crazy hypothetical game of “Well what happens if someone wins 4 or even crazier 6 titles in a row?” Well, two things 1) everyone apart of that organization that helped win those 6 titles should all be auto bids into the Hall of Fame because that is just ridiculous and 2) the count starts over after the third. No prize for 4 and 5 but if you get to that magic number 6 then you get another crown.
So, Roger if you somehow read this crappy half-thrown-together blog. I urge you to consider creating this crown and it should be aptly named after the coach who won it first much like Lombardi.
